What is Iyengar Yoga?
The word Yoga means to unite, union, communion.
It is the art of connecting all the powers of the body, mind, and soul to find balance and to approach life’s events with equanimity. The asanas bring stability, health, and lightness to the limbs. A steady and graceful posture cultivates mental balance and prevents the mind from being restless.
Asanas are not mere gymnastic exercises—they are postures. Through practice, one develops flexibility, balance, endurance, and vitality. Asanas are designed to engage every muscle, nerve, and gland of the body. They create a physique that is pleasant, supple, and strong, without excess muscle, while safeguarding the body from illness.
They overcome fatigue and soothe the nerves. Their true significance lies in how they train and discipline the mind.
Yoga is a state of complete balance between body, awareness, and spirit.
To enable each student to practice with depth and precision across the different families of poses, Iyengar Yoga offers a progressive pedagogy using “props.”
We call “props” the bricks, blankets, chairs, bolsters, straps, and even the walls, which help us progress, explore variations, and move closer to the final posture.

What is the purpose of props in Iyengar Yoga?

Props help to better identify and feel the actions within postures. They sometimes make the pose more challenging… but also more accurate!
They are also used to adapt the postures according to each student’s structure, allowing everyone to benefit from the poses regardless of their physical abilities.
Through correct placement, props help embody the conscious experience of the body, thanks to the finely tuned attention given to sensations and perceptions.
It is a form of presence to oneself and to others, with the body becoming the mediator through which the experience of life flows.
Before we can truly connect with our environment, we must first learn to connect with what is closest and most familiar to us: our body, our senses, our mind.
This practice restores disturbed balances by reintegrating the being into the body, enabling one to live freely, to build inner resources that foster self-respect, to strengthen trust in one’s own capacities, and to accept one’s weaknesses.
Props are first external, but gradually become internal supports that fortify yoga practice, becoming one of the sources that nurture perseverance and daily joy.
The practitioner must cultivate willpower and consistency in order to fully receive the benefits of this yoga, progressing on the path of personal growth with an inward and serene attitude.

When I discovered Sandrine’s Iyengar Yoga teaching, I immediately connected with it. This practice brought together everything I was looking for, and I found the use of ropes, chairs, straps… very playful. In more than 10 years, I never once felt like I was repeating the same session — each time was a new exploration of a pose. Sandrine is a ray of sunshine and an outstanding teacher. You really need to try at least once to understand, so come!
